Location: Brecht Forum, 451 West Street New York, NY 10014

Time: 5:30pm - 9:30pm

Historically, in El Salvador indigenous people have been forced to live in the shadows of a society that discriminates and marginalizes them. With the goal of promoting the ancestral heritage, folk art, traditions, language, ceremonies and elder’s wisdom the original peoples of Nahuizalco, Sonsonate, formed a People’s Council of the Original Nahuat Pipil (CPONPN). In 2010 the CPONPN after an arduous work of lobbing and organizing indigenous communities, the City Council of Nahuizalco passed a Municipal Ordinance of the Rights of The Nahuat Pipil Community of Nahuizalco, the first of its kind in the history of El Salvador.

Please join El Centro Cultural Techantit, El Concilio Nacional Indígena Binacional Salvadoreño, Friends of Co-Madres and New York Cispes for an evening with Elder Tito Pasín aka Tito Reyes Cuadra a Nahuat Pipil, current Major of the Izalco Commune, to discuss the efforts of the indigenous communities to protect the rights of the indigenous people of El Salvador and to maintain their customs, traditions, language, art, land and natural resources for future generations.

Elder Tito Pasín is the author of the book “The Izalco’s Common” where he shares several customs, traditions, and food recipes known by the indigenous communities of Izalco.

For Tito Pasín’s full bio, please click here.

Refreshments will be served.
